Understanding Word Count
The word count (total number of translated words) represents the sum of words translated by Weglot on your website. The word count is a key metric, especially when choosing the right plan for your project. You can learn the number of words you have on your website by using the Word Count tool in the resources section. You can always track your word count on your Weglot Dashboard.
The calculation involves two factors:
- Original Language Word Count: The number of words in your original language.
- Translated Languages: The number of languages you're translating into.
For example, if your website has 8,000 words in the original language and you're translating it into three languages (French, German, and Arabic), your total translated words would be 3 x 8,000 = 24,000. Keep in mind that this count is independent of your website traffic.
What’s included in the word count?
The word count includes both visible and invisible content, such as SEO metadata (meta title, description, image alt attributes). However, media translations or manually added external links don't affect the word count. All translated words on your website are considered, and Weglot retains your translations unless deleted manually. We’ll learn more about how to exclude translations to reduce your word count in the upcoming lessons.
How does Weglot generate these translations?
Weglot doesn't translate your entire website instantly when you connect it to your website. Translations are generated and added gradually to your Translations list as visitors, you, or search engines interact with your translated pages. To generate all translations, you can sync URLs from your dashboard or manually visit your translated pages as we’ll see in the next module.
In the next lesson, we’ll show you how to get started by creating a Weglot account and your first translation project.
