How to set up a client project (the right way)
The order of these steps isn't optional
Setting up a client project on Weglot is straightforward, but the sequence matters more than most agencies realise. If your client creates their own account before you've set up the workspace, the agency benefits (three months free, 15% lifetime discount, commission tracking) all get lost. This episode walks through the five steps to do it correctly, every time.
Step 1 — Create your agency account first
Before anything else, create a Weglot account in your agency's name. Not your client's. This is your master account, the one all client workspaces will live under. Every project you set up in the future will be accessible from here, in one place.
Step 2 — Create a Workspace for the client (not a project)
When you first log in, Weglot will prompt you to set up a project. Don't. Instead, go to your profile, scroll down to Workspaces, and create a new workspace named after the client. The distinction matters: a workspace is the client's own environment — their translations, their settings, their billing. A project lives inside a workspace. Creating the workspace at this stage is what triggers the agency trial automatically.
Step 3 — Install Weglot and set up the project
Inside the client workspace, create the project. Select their CMS, enter their domain, and follow the onboarding steps. Weglot will start detecting and translating the site content immediately. From this point, you have three months of the Pro plan features for free. This is your window to do the full setup, test translations, and get everything right before the client pays anything.
Step 4 — Invite the client at the Workspace level
Go to the Users tab (not Team Members) and add the client from there. This is a detail that catches a lot of agencies out: inviting through Team Members adds them only to the project. Inviting through Users gives them workspace-level access, which is what they need to handle billing. Add their email, enable billing access, and they'll receive an invitation to complete their onboarding.
Step 5 — Transfer ownership and hand off billing
Once your client is in, transfer the workspace ownership to them. You'll find the option in the Users tab. It's the shield icon next to their email. This is the step that ties everything together: it signals to the Partner Hub that this client is linked to your agency, which is what activates commission tracking.
Your client then goes to Billing, clicks Change Plan, and the 15% discount is already applied automatically. No coupon needed. It applies because the workspace was created by your agency. Going through you is genuinely cheaper than going direct, and that's something you can tell clients upfront.
As soon as the client subscribes, your commission starts. Every payment they make from that point on generates a reward for you through the Partner Hub.
Five steps. In this order.
Create your agency account → Create the workspace → Install Weglot → Invite the client → Hand off billing.
Follow this sequence and everything flows automatically. Skip a step or change the order, and the benefits break.
