What the UK Demands Before You Enter

How British Buyers Really Behave

Are British Buyers Really That Different?

Different enough that assuming otherwise can be an expensive mistake.

The fact that the UK is so easy to access from Europe creates a false sense of familiarity. But near doesn’t mean known.

London is the clearest example: intensely international, and a distinct culture you’ll need to get to know rather than assume. The other UK capitals – Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast – each read differently again.

Why Can’t You Build Trust Remotely?

Because remote conversations can hide what buyers really think.

UK professionals are very good at being polite digitally. Their agreement in a meeting doesn’t always mean alignment, and expressed enthusiasm often isn’t real.

“If a UK businessman tells you, ‘Oh, it’s interesting’, you can move on. They didn’t like your product.” – Irene Engelhardt-Régnier, Head of Business Services @ French Chamber of Great Britain

Quentin Debavelaere moved to London to run Malt’s UK operation, and described the alternative: “You can’t build trust on Zoom, especially in the UK, where people will never tell you what they have in mind. But at 5 pm, you go to the pub, and after one beer, you learn more than all your one-on-ones in the week.”

The point is that the most honest conversations happen in the informal moments after the formal ones, so allow those to happen. That opportunity is exactly what you give up by flying in for the day or dialing in from home.

How Fast Does Trust Turn Into Deals?

Faster than you’d expect, once it’s there.

Trust still takes time to earn, no question, but once it exists, deals move more quickly than they would at home for many European companies.

The caveat is that trust in the UK is maintained rather than banked. Keep showing up after the first deal closes rather than assuming the relationship is secured.

What Should You Do Differently in Conversations?

A few things that cost nothing and change a lot.

British buyers are straight to business, but skipping the rapport-building costs you. Banter is real, and Brits value it. So, open with something lighthearted before the pitch.

Shared interests can open doors, too, so it’s worth matching salespeople to clients where you can. Sport – especially football – is an obvious place to start.

Finally, don’t equate local presence with formal meetings. Face-to-face meetings carry less weight in the UK than in France, while industry events draw considerably more attendance and curiosity. We’ll come back to that in Module 4.
